In 2019, South Korea's largest exchange, Upbit, was hacked by the North Korean hacker groups Lazarus and Andariel, resulting in the theft of 342,000 Ethereum ($ETH). The South Korean police confirmed this incident for the first time and pointed out that the hackers exchanged 57% of the stolen Ethereum for Bitcoin at very low prices through three cryptocurrency exchanges operated by North Korea, while the remaining funds were laundered and dispersed to 51 exchanges around the world. In October 2020, the police recovered part of the stolen assets on a trading platform in Switzerland and returned 4.8 Bitcoin to Upbit in October of this year.
